by Sandra John Interiors - August 18th, 2010

As August is now half way through and the temperatures are slowly creeping down, along with everyone’s AC bills, we are busy at work thinking of fun new things for this holiday season. After being at the New York International Gift Fair on Sunday and walking the miles of seasonal gifts, we got excited about going shopping for new holiday decorations and accessories. Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas are right around the corner and you need to prepare early if you want to have the design you’re looking for.

We are going to be doing our first field-trip for this holiday season next Monday, August 23rd, to Creative Displays  & Designs down in Tinton Falls, NJ. We will update you on the some of the shopping results next week but check out their website and products in the mean time to see if you like anything.

Also if you enjoy their website for some holiday cheer, then check out New Growth Designs who we just recently meet at the New York International Gift Fair. We are looking forward to working with them. Their postcard (below) gave inspiration to start early this year on holiday shopping.

And don’t forget, Dining Rooms make Thanksgiving Dinner. We’ll be sharing with you soon new things for dining rooms! If you need new Dining Tables, you need to start looking now.

Using Soft & Hard Treatments Together

by Sandra John Interiors - August 16th, 2010

Roman Shade and Cafe Shutters

Cafe Shutters & Relaxed Roman Shades

Went to install new shutters the other day and wanted to share how you can use soft window treatments and hard window treatments together. This is a picture from a master bathroom that has two windows. The soft window treatments are called relaxed roman shades and these are made from a Cowtan & Tout fabric. They are adjustable to different lengths but these relaxed roman’s look their best when they are only down half of the window. To bring more privacy to the bathroom, the bottom half of the window needed better coverage so we decided to use cafe style wooden shutters. These shutters have 2 1/2″ wide louvers which will bring lots of coverage from the light outside and keep the bathroom private.

Let us know what you think of new window treatments.

Home Office Picture and Display Hanging

by Sandra John Interiors - August 12th, 2010

Wanted to share with everyone a project that our Sandra John Concierge team worked on this week. As you may know we offer professional picture hanging and when we received a request that a sports fanatic needed his new office decked out with all of his sports memorabilia collection, we jumped to the occasion. Below I have shared three picture of what the office looked liked before the installation of the memorabilia, and you can on the floor some of the pictures that we will have layout.

Sandra John Concierge Services to Hang Pictures and Display Cases

As you can see, these walls are bare!! The office looks great with all the new built in cabinetry but it still needs a personal touch to make it truly reflect how this is real sports fanatics office. We started with the side wall (top right picture above) and hung the most difficult and heaviest piece, a 40″w X 25″h display case that will be home to four wood bats and balls. After centering this display case we can then center the next smaller display case and Bath Ruth framed picture above. This wall was a warm-up wall for the next larger back wall.

Side Wall with Large Display Case Installed

After taking a deep breath before, we now can move on to the most challenging wall (bottom right above) and start hanging. We started with the largest piece which is centered on the wall and worked our way out from there and  then we came up with a systematic approach on how to hang all the verticals on the top and bottom. The display cases are not yet filled but I am sure once they are filled the wall will look that much better.

Back Wall with Concierge Picture Hanging Services Installed

This wall was difficult and took time in measuring and making positive that everything lined up correctly. In this above picture you can notice that some of the pictures are not 100%  level but that is because this picture was taken before we used our secret trick to keep pictures staying level all the time. We are happy with the layout that we designed for this wall and we feel that it filled the space perfectly.

The last wall that we concentrated on was the built in cabinetry and TV area (picture on left above). This wall was all about placement and we decided that we wanted to raise the TV, so our first step was to move the wall bracket up so we could hang a picture above and put a display below the TV. We then added all the memorabilia to the shelves and watched a bare wall turn into something magnificent.

Built in Cabinetry Picture and Rearrangement

All-in-all this installation went great and we wanted to share our experience with how you can transform a bare room into a room filled with memorabilia or in different cases memories. Let us know what you think and you can always contact Sandra John Concierge for any requests.

How to Measure a Window for Blinds or Shutters

by Sandra John Interiors - May 2nd, 2010

When measuring for blinds or shutters you need to take into consideration a couple of different things to accommodate your window efficiently. First you need to decide whether you want the treatment installed within the window opening (inside mount) or on you wall/trim (outside mount).

  • Use an inside mount for a cleaner look that shows more of the wood work on your trim but make sure that the depth of the window has sufficient room to allow the treatment to fit properly.
  • Use an outside mount when the depth of the window is too shallow or when you would want to cover up the trim on your window.

There is few other recommendations before you start measuring;

  • If you are measuring a room full of windows and they all look the same size, make sure you measure everyone. Two of the same built windows might have different widths which would cause problems during installation.
  • If your windows are not square, be sure to measure the width of the window at the top, middle, and bottom of the window frame.
  • When measuring your window, make sure to use a steel measuring tape and when writing down your measurements, round to the nearest 1/8″.

Measuring Inside Mount Windows

The picture shows that you need to measure inside the window opening to right up against the window frame. You should also measure at three different spots for the width to make sure that the window is square. Take the smallest measurement for the width (if top of window is not the smallest,  include that measurement for manufacturer) and round to the nearest 1/8″ and do not reduce the width measurement as the manufacturer will do this during production to allow room for installation. When measuring the height of the window make sure to repeat the same steps and measure in three different areas (left, middle, and right) and this time take the tallest measurement.

You will also want to measure the depth of your window frame (where the blind or shutter will be installed) and make sure that the depth is more than 2 1/2″. If the depth is less than 2 1/2″ then you can either contact Sandra John Interiors (908) 204-0545 for more specific details or go with the alternate style and use an outside mount.

Once you have these measurements you are ready to place an order for your blind or shutter.

Measuring Outside Mount Windows

The picture shows that you will need to measure the outside of the window frame for an outside mount. The width of the window should be measured in three different locations (top, middle, and bottom) to be certain that the window is square. The height of the window needs to measured from the top of the outside part of the window frame to the top of the window sill (the bottom from inside the window frame). You should also measure this in three different locations (left, middle, and right) to be sure to the window is square, and if not take the tallest measurement.

You will also want to take into consideration your trim/molding on your window frame. Is the trim/molding flat or does it have a design to it and cause difficulties installing? If you think that there might be a problem during installation then please contact Sandra John Interiors (908) 204-0545 for support or help.

Once you have these measurements you are ready to place an order for you blind or shutter.

I hope that this short how to has helped and thank you for using Sandra John Interiors.
