When measuring for blinds or shutters you need to take into consideration a couple of different things to accommodate your window efficiently. First you need to decide whether you want the treatment installed within the window opening (inside mount) or on you wall/trim (outside mount).

  • Use an inside mount for a cleaner look that shows more of the wood work on your trim but make sure that the depth of the window has sufficient room to allow the treatment to fit properly.
  • Use an outside mount when the depth of the window is too shallow or when you would want to cover up the trim on your window.

There is few other recommendations before you start measuring;

  • If you are measuring a room full of windows and they all look the same size, make sure you measure everyone. Two of the same built windows might have different widths which would cause problems during installation.
  • If your windows are not square, be sure to measure the width of the window at the top, middle, and bottom of the window frame.
  • When measuring your window, make sure to use a steel measuring tape and when writing down your measurements, round to the nearest 1/8″.

Measuring Inside Mount Windows

The picture shows that you need to measure inside the window opening to right up against the window frame. You should also measure at three different spots for the width to make sure that the window is square. Take the smallest measurement for the width (if top of window is not the smallest,  include that measurement for manufacturer) and round to the nearest 1/8″ and do not reduce the width measurement as the manufacturer will do this during production to allow room for installation. When measuring the height of the window make sure to repeat the same steps and measure in three different areas (left, middle, and right) and this time take the tallest measurement.

You will also want to measure the depth of your window frame (where the blind or shutter will be installed) and make sure that the depth is more than 2 1/2″. If the depth is less than 2 1/2″ then you can either contact Sandra John Interiors (908) 204-0545 for more specific details or go with the alternate style and use an outside mount.

Once you have these measurements you are ready to place an order for your blind or shutter.

Measuring Outside Mount Windows

The picture shows that you will need to measure the outside of the window frame for an outside mount. The width of the window should be measured in three different locations (top, middle, and bottom) to be certain that the window is square. The height of the window needs to measured from the top of the outside part of the window frame to the top of the window sill (the bottom from inside the window frame). You should also measure this in three different locations (left, middle, and right) to be sure to the window is square, and if not take the tallest measurement.

You will also want to take into consideration your trim/molding on your window frame. Is the trim/molding flat or does it have a design to it and cause difficulties installing? If you think that there might be a problem during installation then please contact Sandra John Interiors (908) 204-0545 for support or help.

Once you have these measurements you are ready to place an order for you blind or shutter.

I hope that this short how to has helped and thank you for using Sandra John Interiors.
